Three properties opened last year, one opened in January and one is scheduled for a May debut.

In general, we don't recommend visiting during the first few weeks since resort openings may be pushed back due to construction delays and/or some amenities may not be finished, and we like to give the new hotel staff some time to work out any kinks. But after a short grace period, it's a pleasure to walk into a tropical oasis where everything is new and the staff is especially eager to please.

Fishing Lodge Cap Cana -- Part of the Grand Resorts at Cap Cana, this 5-star, all-inclusive retreat is named for the area's superior sport fishing and the large inland marina that it surrounds. It's located in Punta Cana, at the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. Guests have access to a secluded beach, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course and four pools. The Market Salamander Grille offers buffet-style dining, while Bistrot specializes in Mediterranean fare -- the restaurant's upper deck is a great spot for catching the sunset. Accommodations range from 850-square-foot junior suites to one-, two- and three-bedroom villas with fully equipped kitchens. Opened October 2011.

Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa -- This 4.5-star retreat hugs the golden sands of Huatulco on Mexico's Pacific Coast. It's a kids-free, all-inclusive resort with several bars and lounges and eight restaurants, plus a cafe for coffee and pastries. Evening entertainment includes theme parties, live shows and movies on the beach. All rooms face the ocean, and some have private Jacuzzis on the terrace or swim-out access to the resort's pool. Opened December 2011.

Hotel Riu Palace Bavaro -- This is Riu's 34th all-inclusive property in the Caribbean and Latin America, and its fifth hotel in Punta Cana. Guests at the 5.5-star resort enjoy a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as sports like tennis, volleyball, windsurfing, body-boarding and snorkeling. Try a massage or facial in the spa, or relax in the sauna. Jacuzzi suites and junior suites distributed throughout villas have free Wi-Fi; vacationers who book these rooms also have access to a separate pool, sun terrace and bar. Opened December 2011.

The Westin Playa Bonita Panama -- The soaring glass walls of this hotel's lobby frame beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. This 5-star, all-inclusive property fronts a mile-long stretch of golden sand that's about a 20-minute drive from the capital, Panama City. Seven restaurants provide a variety of cuisines, from Pacific Rim fare at Cafe Pacifica to Mediterranean favorites at Soleo. Dip into one of the three infinity pools, work out at the fitness center or explore the region's attractions, perhaps on a whale-watching excursion or a trip to the nearby Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal. Opened January 2012.

Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula -- This 5-star, all-inclusive resort will be perched on a peninsula in Cancun, Mexico, edged on both sides by white-sand beach and turquoise water. Windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling are among activities included in the upfront rate. A kids' club for ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 will keep young guests busy. A spa and gym round out the on-site amenities. Dining venues include Japanese, Italian and Mexican restaurants. Scheduled to open May 2012.
